ENERGY EFFICIENCY CHECKLIST


You are probably using more electricity, gas and oil than necessary.  This checklist will help you identify those no cost and low cost ways to reduce your energy use and costs.  The more checks you have in the YES column the better you're doing already.  Look over the checks in the NO column and see what you can do to eliminate them from your list.



HEATING         YES       NO

1. Is your thermostat set at 55 or lower during the day?
2. Is your thermostat set at 55 or lower when you're sleeping?
3. Is your thermostat set at 55 or lower when you're away?
4. Do you have an automatic clock thermostat?
5. Have you weather stripped the windows and doors?
6. Have you checked your house for any warm air leaks and caulked?
7. Have you considered clear plastic window coverings?
8. Do you avoid heating unused rooms?
9. Do you close the damper when the fireplace is not in use?
10. Do you check to make sure your furnace filter is clean each month?
11. Have you made sure that heating outlets are not blocked by furniture?
12. Do you wear a sweater around the house?
13. Do you open draperies on sunny winter days to help warm the house?
14. Do you close draperies at night to help keep heat in?
15. Do you keep doors to unheated spaces closed?
16. Are your kitchen, bath, or other ventilating fans used sparingly?


WATER HEATING

1. Have you set your water heater thermostat to the lowest practical setting?
2. Does every member of our family make a habit of taking fast showers?
3. Have you installed water saving showerheads or restrictors?
4. Is your water heater wrapped with an insulation blanket?
5. Do you repair leaky pipes and faucets promptly?
6. Do you wash full loads in the dishwasher every time you use it?
7. Do you make sure NOT to run hot water continuously when doing dishes by hand?


COOKING

1. Do you cover pots and pans when cooking?
2. Do you match the size of the burner to the size of the pan?
3. Do you plan entire meals so that you use only the oven or broiler or top burner?



4. Do you keep the oven door closed when cooking or baking?
5. If gas, do you make sure not to pre-heat the oven except when baking?
6. If electric, are you in the habit of turning off burners or oven before the allotted cooking time?


LAUNDRY

1. Do you wash your clothes in full loads every time you do laundry?
2. If impossible to fill washer, do you adjust water level to size of load?
3. Do you wash most loads in warm or cold water instead of hot?
4. Do you rinse your wash in cold water?
5. Do you make sure not to over-dry your clothes?
6. Do you air-dry your clothes outside on sunny days?
7. Do you operate your dryer with full loads of clothes only?
8. Do you clean the lint filter in your dryer every time you use it?


OTHER ENERGY USES

1. Do you turn off lights in unoccupied rooms?
2. Do you make good use of natural light?
3. Do you use lower-wattage bulbs where possible?
4. Do you use outdoor lights only when needed?
5. Do you turn off your TV, radio, or stereo when you leave the room?
6. Do you use the appliance that takes the least amount of energy for the job?


WHAT NEXT?

Here are some other energy saving measures involving expenditures which are very cost-effective for most homes.  After adopting the above practices, you should consider the following:

-Make sure that you have the level of insulation recommended for this
area- at least R-30 of insulation in your attic.

-Install storm windows and doors to keep in heated/cooled air.
